What is a weight bench multi gym?

It is an adjustable weight bench with extra training stations bolted on. The base is an adjustable backrest and seat that tilt between decline, flat and incline. Around that, makers add a leg developer (padded rollers for leg extensions and leg curls), a preacher curl pad, uprights to hold a barbell, posts for weight plates and sometimes a low pulley or resistance bands.

The result is a versatile full body setup built around free weights. You press, row and curl with a barbell or adjustable dumbbells, then use the leg station for quads and hamstrings. Unlike a stack multi gym there is no fixed weight stack, so the resistance is whatever plates you own. That keeps the frame light, usually 14-40kg, and much cheaper than a stack machine.

Who a weights bench gym suits

  • Beginners who want one piece of kit for a full body workout without a commercial gym membership.
  • Strength training regulars who already own a barbell, weight plates or an adjustable dumbbell set and want somewhere to use them.
  • Anyone short on space: a foldable workout bench packs away, a stack machine doesn't.
  • Home workout fans on a budget: a good bench costs a fraction of a 45-100kg stack gym.

The main types of weight bench gym

Foldable benches with leg and preacher attachments

The lightest option. A foldable adjustable bench gets a leg station at the front and a removable preacher pad, with dumbbells doing most of the work. They suit flats and spare bedrooms.

Steelite AZ6085VC foldable weight bench with leg station and preacher pad
PIC: Steelite AZ6085VC Adjustable Weight Bench on Amazon - weighs just 13.9kg yet is rated to 349kg, with 7 backrest levels, leg extension and leg curl stations, a 3-angle preacher pad, resistance bands and wheels. It stores upright in a corner or flat under a bed.

Benches with a barbell rack

These add two uprights so you can bench press with a bar, often with safety catches and storage pegs. The Oppsdecor WB595 still folds in 3 seconds, while larger 6-in-1 to 9-in-1 models add squat stands, dip handles and a pulley.

Olympic benches with walk-in uprights

Wider, heavier frames built around a 7ft Olympic bar. The Body Champ BCB3780 is a two-piece design with 99cm between the uprights, so you can step inside to squat as well as press.

Leverage gyms

Here you load plates onto press arms that move on a set path, with a gym bench underneath. They feel safer for heavy pressing on your own because the arms can't fall on you. Several of our Marcy machines work this way, and the Yoleo two-piece chest press pairs independent press arms with a separate flat and incline bench rated to 500kg.

Bench gym or stack machine?

A stack machine has a selector pin and a fixed stack - the Homcom A91-134BK has 45kg in 10 plates and is certified to EN 20957 - so changing weight takes a second and every movement is guided. A weights bench costs less, takes less floor space and lets you lift far more, but you need plates and good form. For guided strength training, compare our 90kg stack gyms.

The pattern is clear: foldable benches are under 72cm wide, rack models run to 100-112cm, and the big 9-in-1 sets need close to 3 metres of length once the leg station is in place.

How to choose a weight bench multi gym

Read the capacity small print

The headline number (300kg, 408kg, even 544kg) is usually a static load on the whole frame. The figures that matter are the user weight limit and the limits on the bar rest and leg station, which are often far lower.

Aceshin adjustable weight bench with squat stands, leg developer and preacher curl
PIC: Aceshin Adjustable Weight Bench on Amazon - a good example of reading the small print: the frame is rated to 408kg, but the bar rest is limited to 93kg and the leg station to 45kg. It takes 2-inch Olympic bars and has 6 backrest positions and 4 upright heights.

Olympic or standard weight plates

Olympic plates have 2-inch (50mm) holes and go on a 7ft Olympic bar, which weighs about 20kg. Standard plates have 1-inch holes and suit lighter bars. Check that the storage posts take the plates you already own; many models, including the Goimu Z3 and Marcy PM4400, accept both.

Backrest, seat and padding

More backrest positions give finer incline steps; 6-7 is generous, 4 is basic for a flat bench that only tilts a little. Look for an adjustable seat so you don't slide on incline presses, and around 5cm of firm foam. A wider back pad (30cm on the Keppi) adds stability under a heavy bar.

Footprint and room height

Measure the floor, then add space around it. A 7ft bar is 213cm long, so you need that width plus room to load plates at each end. Uprights stand 150-175cm tall, so most rooms are fine for pressing, but check before adding a pulley tower.

Foldable designs and storage

If the fitness bench has to disappear after each session, choose a foldable adjustable weight bench with wheels. The Kingsmith B1 folds down to 117 x 34 x 41.5cm and has resistance bands built in, and the Steelite stands upright in a corner.

Frame and stability

Look for wide feet with rubber caps, heavy duty, commercial-grade steel tubing rather than thin box section, and safety catches. Our heavy duty home gyms are worth a look if you lift heavy.

Quick checklist

  • User weight limit and bar rest limit, not just the headline figure
  • Olympic (2-inch) or standard (1-inch) plate fit
  • Number of backrest positions and an adjustable seat
  • Assembled size and folded size
  • Leg developer, preacher pad and dip or pulley extras you will actually use
  • Assembly time: most take 30-120 minutes

Exercises you can do on a weight lifting bench

  • Chest: flat, incline and decline bench press with a barbell or dumbbells, dumbbell flyes, and butterfly presses on models with a pec attachment.
  • Shoulders: seated shoulder press with the backrest upright, lateral raises and rear-delt flyes.
  • Back: one-arm dumbbell rows, chest-supported rows on an incline and lat pulldowns on sets with a pulley.
  • Arms: preacher curls for the bicep, dumbbell curls and lying triceps extensions.
  • Legs and glutes: leg extensions, lying leg curls, barbell squats on models with stands and hip thrusts with your upper back on the bench.
  • Core: decline sit-ups and crunches with the leg rollers holding your feet, which makes it a sit up bench too.

That range of exercises is why a dumbbell bench with attachments covers so much. For heavier leg work, our leg machines give a fuller range of movement, and a Smith machine adds guided squats.

Goimu Z3 9-in-1 weight bench multi gym with squat stands and pulley
PIC: Goimu Z3 Olympic Weight Bench Set on Amazon - a 9-in-1 all-in-one set rated to 408kg with squat stands, 6 leg rollers and a pulley for pulldowns. It takes 1-inch and 2-inch weight plates, but at 277cm long it needs a garage or spare room.

Setting up your home training area

  1. Lay a rubber gym mat to protect the floor and stop the frame creeping.
  2. Leave at least a bar's length of clear space across the uprights, plus walking room behind the bench.
  3. Keep weight plates on the storage posts, not the floor, so the frame stays balanced.
  4. Assemble on a flat surface and re-check bolts after the first few sessions.

Training safely at home

Without a training partner, set the safety catches just below your chest, use collars on the bar and don't load up to a weight you can't re-rack. Leverage gyms and pulley stations help here because the load can't drop onto you. The NHS physical activity guidelines recommend strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on at least 2 days a week, and the NHS also has a guide to simple strength exercises for beginners. The full evidence is in the UK Chief Medical Officers' guidelines.

Marcy PM4400 leverage home gym with swivel workout bench
PIC: Marcy Pro PM4400 Leverage Bench on Amazon - a leverage gym where the press arms move on a fixed path: front arm capacity 226kg, rear arm 181kg, a 10-position swivel bench and a 158kg maximum user weight, with a 2-year warranty.

Looking after your bench

  • Wipe the padding after every workout; sweat cracks PU leather over time.
  • Check pins, pop-pins and leg roller bolts monthly.
  • Keep it out of damp garages where you can, or treat bare steel to stop rust.

Bench or full home gym?

A weight bench multi gym is the best value if you enjoy free weights and already own, or plan to buy, a barbell and dumbbells. Move up to a stack machine if you want quick weight changes and guided movements: our cable crossover machines add fly and row angles a bench can't, and Strongway gym machines combine uprights, a pulley and a bench in one frame.

Weight bench multi gym FAQs

What is the difference between a weight bench and a multi gym?

An adjustable weight bench is a padded platform you lift free weights on. A multi gym combines several stations in one frame, usually with a weight stack. A bench with attachments sits in between: leg, preacher and bar stations, loaded with your own plates.

How much space do I need?

Foldable benches need about 160 x 55cm in use. Benches with uprights take roughly 200 x 110cm, and 9-in-1 models up to 277cm long. Add clearance for the bar and for loading plates.

Do these benches come with weights?

Most don't. Some listings, like the Goimu Z3 with 120lbs of weights and a bar, include a starter set, but usually you buy plates separately.

Can I bench press safely on my own?

Yes, if the catches are set at the right height, you use collars and you stay well within the rated load. A leverage gym such as the Marcy PM4400 is the safest choice for solo heavy pressing.

Is a 408kg capacity bench strong enough?

For most home users, yes, but check the separate limits. A frame rated to 408kg may only allow 93kg on the bar rest, as on the Aceshin.
