A 90kg multi gym gives you a full gym's worth of stations - lat pulldown, chest press, pec dec, leg extension and preacher curl - on one frame, with a weight stack heavy enough to keep a beginner progressing for years and still challenge an intermediate lifter. It suits anyone setting up a garage or spare-room home multi gym who has outgrown a 45kg starter machine.
Below are machines with stacks of roughly 80-100kg, or resistance in that range. Short on room? See our compact multi gyms. Want more load? Browse heavy duty home gyms.

Retailers use the figure in two different ways, and the difference matters more than any other number on the box.
The plates themselves add up to that weight: a column of plates on two guide rods that you select with a pin. The Pro Fitness multi home gym sold by Argos is this type - Argos gives the stack weight and maximum resistance as the same figure - and so is the Marcy Eclipse HG5000, which Fitshop sells with a 13-plate stack and selector pin.
The gearing can multiply or reduce what you feel. The Marcy MWM-4965 and MWM7119 both carry a 68kg stack, yet are sold on 90kg resistance because the arms multiply the load on the chest press. On the MWM7119 the preacher curl pad only reaches about 45kg. It works the other way too: the Marcy Club MKM-81010 below quotes 131kg from its stack.
So when you compare machines, check both figures. A full stack gives you its weight on direct-pull stations such as the low row; a resistance figure may only apply to one movement.

Real figures from the manufacturers' listings - our own range plus the models the big UK shops sell.

Two things stand out. A plate-stack home multi gym in this class is heavy - the York weighs 162kg built and the Marcy Club 167kg - and the plate steps vary a lot. Small steps make progress smoother: a jump of 7kg is a big leap on a curl or shoulder exercise, while 4.5-5kg is easier to add.
For most people training at home, yes. It is roughly double the 45kg found on entry-level machines such as the York Aspire 420 or Homcom's 45kg gyms, and it is the jump that stops you outgrowing the frame within a year. The extra load counts most on the big movements - lat pulldowns, rows and leg work - where a 45kg stack soon runs out.
Where it can feel light is a strong lifter's leg work or a heavy pulldown. If that's you, look at a stack with gearing that adds load (like the 131kg Marcy Club), a pneumatic system such as the Finnlo Bio Force Extreme (up to 120kg in 2.5kg steps), or our heavy duty range. If you'd rather load a bar yourself, a smith machine home gym takes Olympic plates instead.
The NHS advises adults to do strength exercises on 2 or more days a week that work the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms. A typical machine at this level reaches all of those from one seat:
Argos lists exactly this set for its own 90kg model, with a double pulley system. If you want to load a barbell too, our bench press multi gyms and weight bench multi gyms add a proper bench; for free-moving work, a cable crossover machine is the better tool. The NHS also has a simple guide to strength exercises if you're starting out.

Most of these frames stand 196-217cm tall, so check the ceiling first, especially under a low beam or roller door. Argos's answer for the Pro Fitness model is a training area of 3 metres around the machine and 0.6 metres of clearance above its 207cm height. Allow for the leg developer and press arms swinging out, not just the frame's footprint.
A home multi gym of this size arrives in several heavy boxes. Argos says its model comes in six cartons, the heaviest 62kg - the weight stack. That is a two-person lift, and the HSE's manual handling guidance is worth a read before you carry plates up a drive. Built, the whole unit weighs 160kg or more, so a ground floor or concrete slab is the safest place for it.
Plan for an afternoon. Argos reviewers report between about 3.5 and 6 hours, and several call it a two-person job; threading the cables takes the longest. Our leg extension gym machines are a simpler build if you only need the leg station.

Brand loyal? Our Marcy multi gyms and Strongway multi gyms pages list each maker's range side by side.
Yes. Muscle grows from progressive overload - adding load or reps over time - and this much load gives most home users years of room, with a full body workout from one seat. The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines back regular strength training at any age.
No. The gearing changes it station by station. On some machines the press feels heavier than the stack and the curl lighter - the Marcy MWM7119 hits its peak on the press but about 45kg on the preacher curl.
Usually 160-170kg once built: the York 100kg model weighs 162kg and the Marcy Club 167kg. Power rod machines like the Bowflex PR1000 are far lighter at 59kg because there are no plates.
At least the machine's height plus room for the pulldown bar - Argos advises 0.6m above the 207cm Pro Fitness frame. With a low ceiling, compare heights: the York 100kg model stands 196cm, among the lowest here.
Not normally on a single-stack machine like these, as every station draws on the same plates. Two-stack frames such as the Body-Solid GDCC-250 (2 x 72kg) allow it but need far more floor space.
